Jack Paar's Walk-Off: A Stand Against Censorship That Changed TV
On February 11, 1960, Jack Paar, the host of The Tonight Show, made a dramatic exit in protest against censorship. Known for his sharp wit and emotional unpredictability, Paar had taken over the late-night show after Steve Allen's retirement. He quickly became a beloved figure, introducing rising stars like Woody Allen, Carol Burnett, Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, and the Smothers Brothers to a wide audience.
More than just a comedian, Paar often delved into serious and politically charged topics. He openly supported Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution, and during the Cold War, he became the first entertainer to broadcast from the Berlin Wall. Paar's approach resonated with audiences, significantly increasing the show's reach.
At the peak of his career, Paar's long joke about a "W.C." (water closet) led to an unexpected turn of events. The joke, misunderstood by NBC censors as inappropriate, was cut from the show without Paar's knowledge. The following night, an outraged Paar announced his departure from The Tonight Show on live television:
"I've made a decision about what I'm going to do. I'm leaving The Tonight Show. There must be a better way to make a living than this, a way of entertaining people without being constantly involved in some form of controversy."
Paar's emotional departure left announcer Hugh Downs to fill the gap, making headlines for weeks. A month later, Paar returned to the show, beginning with:
"As I was saying, before I was interrupted. When I walked off, I said there must be a better way of making a living. Well, I've looked... and there isn't."
Paar continued to entertain and challenge his audience for another three successful years before passing the baton to Johnny Carson. Carson acknowledged Paar's impact, stating he was happy to be "the prince" to Paar's "king" of late-night television. Jack Paar passed away in 2004, leaving a legacy of wit, emotion, and a bold stand for creative freedom.
